End February I was in Cairo to attend an international conference. I visited also several historic sites which I hadn’t seen during previous visits in this beautiful and ancient city and some others which had impressed my imagination during previous visits. I could therefore admire several Mosques in the older part of Cairo ( al Azhar and its ancient University, and the Hussein, Aqmar, al Kakim Mosques ) and several religious and academic sites, several of which are actually under restauration. I was also in the Citadel, on top of a hill overlooking the City, and I visited its Mosques which date back to the period of the Mameluks and of the Turks ( Mehment Alí Mosque ). At the end of my staying I participated in a meeting in the modern Smart Village which hosts information technologies facilities, just near the Giza pyramids.

Alla fine di febbraio sono stato al Cairo per assistere ad una Conferenza internazionale. Ne ho approfittato per visitare alcuni siti storici che non mi era stato possibile vedere in occasione di precedenti visite e per rivedere edifici che mi avevano colpito per la loro bellezza architettonica ed artistica. In particolare ho visitato tutta una serie di moschee situate nella parte più antica del Cairo ( al Azhar, sede della famosa Università, e le Moschee di Hussein, Aqmar, al Hakim ) e tutta una serie di edifici di studio e di culto, molti dei quali in restaurazione. Sono stato anche nella Cittadella, nella parte più alta della città, con le sue moschee risalenti all’epoca dei mamelucchi e di influenza turca ( moschea di Mehmet Alí ). Alla fine ho visitato il modernissimo  Smart Village, dedicato alle tecnologie dell’informazione, in prossimità delle piramidi di Ghiza.

After just one year I and my family visited once more Yucatàn on the traces of the Maya civilization. This time we selected sites which have been recently open to the public or which are rather difficult to reach. We were once more fascinated by the beauty of the architectural and artistic remains: well structured urban centres, linked by sac-bé, white small roads, include a rich variety of ceremonial buildings ( temples, pyramids, altars, platforms ), steles, carvings, stuccos and mural paintings often well preserved or professionally restaured.  All over the Yucatàn peninsula the ruins of well over a hundred Maya sites of varying sizes can still be found and most of these sites have not been extensively investigated. It is astonishing how these ancient people who did not use metals, draught-animals and means of transport on wheels might have developed such masterpieces, leaving also detailed information through hieroglyfic inscriptions and accurate astronomical calculations based on observation but also on a complex and efficient numerical system.

A Febbraio sono stato con la mia famiglia, per la seconda volta a distanza di un anno,  nello Yucatàn sulle tracce della civiltà Maya. Questa volta abbiamo scelto siti aperti al pubblico di recente o di accesso leggermente problematico. Siamo stati affascinati ancora una volta dalla bellezza dei capolavori artistici ed architettonici: centri urbani ben strutturati, collegati da sac-bé, strette stradine bianche, offrono una ricca varietà di edifici da cerimonia ( templi, piramidi, altari, piattaforme ), steli, altorilievi, stucchi, affreschi, tutti spesso ben conservati e restaurati con rara professionalità. Lungo tutta la penisola dello Yucatàan sono stati reperite le rovine di oltre un centinaio di siti Maya di varia grandezza ed estensione: molto non sono stati ancora portati interamente  alla luce. E’ stupefacente come un popolo che non conosceva i metalli e non si è avvalso di bestie da soma o di veicoli su ruote abbia potuto lasciarci una tale massa di capolavori, unitamente ad informazioni dettagliate per mezzo di sofisticati geroglifici e calcoli astronomici estremamente precisi, basati sull’osservazione ma soprattutto su un efficientissimo sistema numerico.
